Crisis Support & Counselling In Schools

Schools can experience a number of crisis situations that have the potential to harm mental and physical health, the learning environment, and safety of everyone in the school system.
A crisis can cause a drastic and tragic change to the environment. This change is generally overwhelming and uncontrollable as well as unwanted and frightening. It may create a sense of helplessness, hopelessness, and vulnerability combined with a loss of safety.

A school crisis is any traumatic event that seriously disrupts coping and problem-solving abilities of pupils and school staff. It is typically sudden, unexpected, dramatic and forceful and may even threaten survival.

  • Death of a student or teacher
  • Accidents

Trauma Debrief

Kalmer Counselling is proud to offer Trauma Debrief services, designed to provide immediate, compassionate support for individuals who have experienced traumatic events. As a leading counselling service in the North East, we are dedicated to helping individuals process and recover from trauma in a safe, structured, and supportive environment. Whether it’s a personal crisis, workplace incident, or community-wide event, our trauma debriefing services are here to help clients regain a sense of control and emotional stability.

What is Trauma Debriefing?

Trauma Debriefing is a therapeutic process that helps individuals and groups process their reactions to traumatic or highly stressful events. It is typically offered in the immediate aftermath of an incident and is designed to provide emotional and psychological support, reduce the risk of long-term trauma, and promote healing. Trauma debriefing involves discussing the event, normalising the emotional responses, and offering coping strategies to manage the aftermath.

At Kalmer Counselling, our Trauma Debriefing services are conducted by highly trained and experienced therapists who specialise in trauma informed practice. We offer a safe, confidential space for individuals and groups to explore their feelings, reactions, and concerns, providing essential support at a critical time.

Our Approach to Trauma Debriefing

Kalmer Counselling’s trauma debriefing approach is sensitive, empathetic, and tailored to the unique needs of each individual or group. We understand that trauma affects everyone differently, and our goal is to provide personalised care that meets each person where they are, helping them to process their experience in a way that promotes recovery and resilience.

  • Immediate Emotional Support: Trauma can leave individuals feeling overwhelmed, confused, and emotionally raw. Our trauma debriefing sessions focus on providing immediate emotional support, helping people to express their feelings and thoughts about the event. By offering a compassionate, non-judgmental space, we help individuals begin the process of making sense of what has happened and start their healing journey.
  • Normalisation of Responses: One of the key components of trauma debriefing is normalising the emotional and physical responses individuals may experience following a traumatic event. Our therapists help clients understand that their reactions—whether they include shock, anger, sadness, anxiety, or guilt—are natural responses to abnormal situations. This reassurance is crucial in reducing feelings of isolation and fear, helping people feel more in control of their emotional state.
  • Developing Coping Strategies: After a traumatic event, it is common for individuals to struggle with managing their emotions, thoughts, and behaviours. At Kalmer Counselling, we work with individuals to develop practical coping strategies that can help them manage stress, anxiety, and trauma-related symptoms. These techniques may include grounding exercises, relaxation methods, and cognitive strategies to reframe negative thoughts. Our goal is to empower individuals to regain emotional balance and resilience in the face of trauma.
  • Preventing Long-Term Trauma: Early intervention is key in preventing long-term psychological effects such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Trauma debriefing aims to reduce the likelihood of these effects by addressing the trauma in its early stages. Our therapists guide individuals through the initial stages of processing the event, ensuring that they feel supported and equipped with the tools to prevent long-term emotional and mental health challenges.
  • Group and Individual Debriefing: Kalmer Counselling offers both individual and group trauma debriefing sessions. For individuals who prefer one-on-one support, we provide private, focused sessions that allow for in-depth exploration of their personal experiences. For organisations, teams, or communities affected by a shared traumatic event, our group debriefing sessions offer a collective space to process the event together. These sessions can strengthen group cohesion, provide mutual support, and promote collective healing.

Who Can Benefit from Trauma Debriefing?

Trauma debriefing is beneficial for anyone who has experienced a sudden or distressing event that leaves them feeling emotionally shaken or distressed. This can include:

  • Workplace incidents, such as accidents or violent events
  • Personal crises, including accidents, assaults, or natural disasters
  • Sudden loss or bereavement
  • Medical emergencies or near-death experiences
  • Community-wide traumatic events, such as natural disasters or acts of violence

Our trauma debriefing services are open to individuals, families, groups, and organisations, providing flexible support for any situation where trauma has occurred.
